A F Stoddard & Co Ltd was one of the United Kingdom's leading quality carpet manufacturers. Dating from 1862, the company enjoyed success in domestic and commercial carpet production. In 1876 William C. Gray started producing carpets on two hand looms in a little shop in Carrick Street in Ayr. As production grew the company required larger premises and moved to a site in Newton-on-Ayr in 1877. It was on this site that the new factory would be built by the beginning of the 1880s. James Templeton (1802-1885) was born in Campbeltown, Argyll & Bute, Scotland. He began his career in a small wholesale draper in Glasgow, Scotland, before working for a merchant house in Liverpool, England. Blackwood Morton & Sons was a company that comprised of two Kilmarnock families that had a long tradition of weaving. The Blackwoods were cotton, worsted, and wool-spinners as early as the 1750s.
